Onnoghen: “We are ready”- APC senators vow to resist Buhari’s impeachment

Members of All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upper chamber, Sunday, reiterated their bid to defend the action of President Muhammadu Buhari over the removal of Justice Walter Onnoghen as the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).

There is an alleged plan that the leadership of the senate is trying to initiate impeachment proceedings against the President over the action.

The Senate who had earlier adjourned its sitting till after the presidential and national assembly elections will reconvene on Tuesday in an emergency session to discuss issues bothering on the suspension of Onnoghen.

However, the leadership of the House will meet on Sunday ahead of the emergency session.

Onnoghen is facing trial over non-declaration of some of his assets.

Speaking on behalf og his colleagues, Senator Ali Ndume who was former leader of the senate informed reporters that Buhari did not violate any part of the constitution.

He said, “As members of the APC in the National Assembly, we will put the nation’s interest above any parochial or sectional consideration in dealing with the issue.

“However, if anybody wants to start another trouble in the Senate over the issue, we are ready. We have the number; we have the strength because we constitute the majority.

“It’s just that the Senate leadership wants to play to the gallery, otherwise, I don’t see the same leadership that accused the judiciary of meddling in its affairs now moving against the President for fighting corruption in that arm of government.”
