Transfer: Barcelona weigh up second raid on Ajax for Dutch defender

Not content with purchasing one Dutch starlet from Ajax already in this window, Barcelona have their eyes set on another already.

The Spanish giants have identified Matthijs de Ligt as the long-term replacement for Gerard Pique at the heart of their defence, claim reports in Spain.

A potential move to the Nou Camp would see him follow Dutch team-mate Frenkie de Jong, who completed a £65m move on Wednesday.
But there remains one sizeable obstacle in the way, that of the 19-year-old’s agent, Mino Raiola.

The superagent would prefer his client to develop elsewhere, before making the switch to Barca, according to Mundo Deportivo.
They report that de Ligt is determined to join his compatriot in making the move to Catalonia.

But they go on to say that Barcelona have priorities in other positions on the pitch.

With Luis Suarez just turned 32, the need for another striker to compliment the Uruguayan is pressing.

And with Jordi Alba turning 30 in March, Barca recognise that competition for the left-back will become necessary.

De Ligt has made 92 appearances in three seasons for his boyhood club and has earned 13 senior caps for Holland.

He has become a key part of Ronald Koeman’s side that will face England in the Nations League this summer.
