Jamie Carragher reveals how Liverpool can beat ‘better’ Man City to EPL title

Jamie Carragher believes that Liverpool must pin their hopes on Manchester City progressing to the latter stages of the Champions League this season if the Reds are to have a chance of winning the Premier League title.

Last weekend’s Premier League action saw City open up a gap to Liverpool and Chelsea at the top of the table for the first time this season.

Pep Guardiola’s side were comfortable 6-1 home winners against Southampton, whilst Liverpool, who many are expecting to be City’s main challengers this season, were held to a 1-1 draw away at Arsenal.

Former Liverpool centre-back Carragher claimed that the current Premier League champions are ‘better’ than Jurgen Klopp’s side this season and says the Reds’ title hopes depend on how far City go in the Champions League.

“I think Liverpool’s hope of winning the league is in the second half of the season if City go far in the Champions League, and hope that their focus is on that, taking their eye off the ball slightly,” Carragher said on Sky Sports.

“That’s the only chance Liverpool have got, because City are better than them.

“But I think for the supporters and everyone around the club, Jurgen Klopp speaks very well and so do the players about the situation – Liverpool have made a brilliant start.”

Carragher, who spent his whole career with Liverpool and clocked up over 700 appearances, says his former side deserve credit for their start to the season, despite conceding a late equaliser to Arsenal on Saturday.

The Reds have accumulated 27 points from their opening 11 fixtures this season and remain unbeaten.
