Credible leadership only response to challenges of youths- Gov. Obaseki

Godwin Obaseki, the Governor of Edo state, Friday said that the response to the challenges of the youth requires credible leadership.

Obaseki said this while delivering the 2018 National Alumni Lecture of the University of Ibadan Alumni Association, Nigeria (UIAA) title: Technical Education & Skill Acquisition as Imperatives for Youth Empowerment at Trenchard Hall, University of Ibadan.

In his speech, he berated the state of technical and vocational education in Nigeria which in his words, “have been neglected for too long” and therefore, called for credible leadership to empower the youth through technical education and skills acquisition.

“If we truly want to work for peace, stability and growth in our nation, we must rise up to empower youths through technical education and skills acquisition.” He urged.

In his submission, he called for the need to address the nonchalant attitude of the society towards technical and vocational education, establishment of social welfare enhancement programmes, infrastructural development and so on.

While citing the initiatives which his own administration has so far embarked on to deal with the challenges of labour, he reiterated the determination of the government of Edo state in bridging the gap in the economy, labour demand and technical education.

Personalities present at the lecture are; the representative of the governor of Oyo state; the Deputy Governor, Otunba Moses A. Adeyemo, the Vice Chancellor of the University; Prof. Abel I. Olayinka with other principal officers, representative of the Department of Classics; Prof. Kunbi Olasope, members of the UIAA, members of the Edo state associations and cultural groups in Ibadan, students, among others.

Governor Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki is an alumnus of the University of Ibadan where he studied Classics.
