SCHMEICHEL-LEICESTER HEROICS: A SERIOUS LESSON FOR ARSENAL

The 2nd leg of the round of 16 champions league between Leicester and Sevilla, was a reminder of the famous display that won the Foxes the Premier League last season; a show Arsenal and Arsene Wenger can desperately use.

It suffices to say that Leicester have been below par in comparison with their famous victory of clinching the title last season. However, their fortune seems to have changed since the sack of their manger Claudio Ranieri in their ‘Shakespeare-fairy tale comeback’ as they have been flying high since then winning two out of two matches and scoring three goals in each of them. Leicester showed drive, intensity and determination across two legs in the Champions League with Kasper Schmeichel saving spot kicks in both legs and made a fantastic reaction save from a Nasri shot that could have made the tie complicated.

In fact, his heroics won him the keeper of the week. He further denied Carroll and West Ham a couple of times to ensure the Foxes had all three points in their Premier League fixture. Such was Leicester’s resilience and attitude that Vardy landed punches on his face continuously for missing a glittering chance against Sevilla.

Arsenal’s most illustrious legend, Thierry Henry captures what Arsenal team lack after their disappointing loss to West Brom. He said “…and they had nowhere near the desire, commitment and attitude required to win a game in the Premier League. It was all about attitude”.

One thing is clear, Arsenal lack the right attitude to contend for the Premier league title and it was no surprise Arsenal fans were calling for Wenger’s head. Arsenal must not throw caution to the wind their desperate search for a new manager as the consequence may be graver than `anticipated. Liverpool are still struggling since Rafael Benitez departure and Man United are still trying to find their feet since the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson resigned.

Arsenal perhaps need a new manager. But he must be one who can instill attitude in ‘attitudeless’ Arsenal.
