Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), alongside Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), UI chapter, on Monday, 13th March, 2016 have embarked on an indefinite strike owing to unmet agreements between the University Management and the Unions.
It should be recalled that there was a Joint Action Congress by the Unions for resolution on their plights which was communicated to the University’s management in a letter dated 8 March, 2017, and unanimously signed by the Chairmen of the three Unions.
Today, at 8am, at Niser Park (a regular convergence for the Unions) in the University, the frustrated workers were seen deliberating on the next step of action to take in a Congress after their requests of the Management to refund the short-fall in salaries forthwith, payment of promotions arrears till date, refund of pensions deducted from 2004 till date amongst other issues saw no yielding response from the School Management.
The Unions in their Congress decided to go on indefinite strike which will without any doubt paralyses the School academic and non-academic activities. One of the Congress men was quoted as saying, “Let’s us lock all the gates leading to Bursary Department if they fail to ensure that our salaries are being paid in full”.
It is yet to be seen what will be the response of the School Management to this indefinite strike after just three weeks into the current session.
